Sliding doors are doors consisting of one or two panels that, when opened, gradually move parallel to the vertical surface on which they are installed. Sliding doors are used in shopping centers, stores, hotels, certain types of public transport, as well as in bathrooms, wardrobe closets, and as partitions between rooms. For their production, wood, particleboard materials, glass, aluminum, fiberglass, etc. are used.
In some Russian-language sources, not only parallel-sliding doors are classified as sliding doors, but also the so-called folding-sliding doors, which most often serve a decorative function. In Europe, the requirements for sliding doors are defined by the EN 1527 standard.
Primitive analogues of this type of door system were used as far back as Ancient Rome, as confirmed by archaeological finds in Pompeii. Some sliding doors are equipped with an automatic opening system and contain a magnetic emergency unlocking mechanism. The first automatic sliding doors were developed in 1960 by the American company Horton Automatics.
