Sliding wardrobes save space and are useful for apartments with limited area. They can be built-in or freestanding. The main materials are particle board and MDF. Sliding systems can be bottom-supported or suspended, and bottom-supported ones are either framed or frameless. The quality of rollers and profile determines the durability of the wardrobe.

Sliding wardrobes and sliding systems

Sliding wardrobes are a real salvation for many modern apartments with limited space. They optimize the area and store a multitude of items, while not spoiling the interior. If the dimensions and design of the sliding wardrobe are chosen correctly, additional storage spaces can be minimized.

Built-in or freestanding sliding wardrobe?

Some rooms in houses are equipped with niches and recesses suitable for built-in sliding wardrobes. The back and side walls of the wardrobe are formed from the room’s walls. Sometimes such constructions do not have their own ceiling and floor, and their hangers and shelves are attached to the walls. While disrupting the integrity and finish of the walls, a built-in sliding wardrobe gives the apartment owner a significant advantage: every centimeter of the room is used efficiently.

Freestanding sliding wardrobes are full-fledged independent furniture pieces that can be moved around the apartment. They have side walls, as well as top and bottom panels. Freestanding sliding wardrobes have gained great popularity due to their mobility. They are perfectly suited for rooms with large area.

Materials of manufacture

The body, shelves, and doors of wardrobes are mainly made from two popular materials: particle board and MDF.

Particle boards (chipboard) are produced at high temperatures from waste wood of inexpensive species and binding materials.

MDF is a more environmentally friendly and safe material. The abbreviation MDF stands for “Medium Density Fibreboard”.

The basis for MDF production is fine wood shavings, which are compressed under high temperature and pressure. The material is durable, strong, moisture-resistant, but has a higher price than its analogues.

What is a sliding wardrobe system?

Sliding systems are important components of sliding wardrobes. Their material determines the overall quality of the furniture. A low-quality system can significantly shorten the wardrobe’s lifespan, which is why it’s important to choose wisely.

Types of sliding systems: bottom-supported and suspended

A bottom-supported sliding system includes lower and upper rollers. The lower rollers are installed on special rails at the bottom of the wardrobe and bear the entire weight of the unit, while the upper ones serve only a supporting function. A suspended sliding system differs in that the entire structure is supported by the upper rollers, and there are no lower ones in the wardrobe. This is a less popular option in our country.

Types of bottom-supported sliding systems: framed and frameless

In frameless systems, the doors are not edged with a profile. Therefore, doors with a frameless system are made in smaller sizes and thicker for strength. Framed sliding systems are edged with a profile that gives the doors rigidity; the material used is not as thick as in the frameless system, and the doors are made larger.

How to choose a sliding system?

Sliding systems are perfectly suited for any room if chosen correctly. What should you pay attention to? Several factors should be considered, such as the profile color, dimensions (which depend on the size of the wardrobe you need), and material.
