Sliding doors are doors consisting of one or two panels, which, when opened, gradually move parallel to the vertical surface on which they are installed. Sliding doors are used in shopping centers, stores, hotels, certain types of public transport, as well as in bathrooms, wardrobes, and as partitions between rooms. For their production, wood, particleboard materials, glass, aluminum, fiberglass, and so on are used.
In some Russian-language sources, sliding doors include not only parallel-sliding ones but also so-called sliding-folding doors, which most often serve a decorative function. In Europe, regulations regarding sliding doors are defined in standard EN 1527.
Primitive analogues of this type of door systems were used as early as Ancient Rome, as confirmed by archaeological finds in Pompeii. Some sliding doors are equipped with an automatic opening system and contain a magnetic emergency unlocking mechanism. The first automatic sliding doors were developed in 1960 by the American company Horton Automatics.
